This report analyses the current state of heavy transport, land and maritime, in Spain and Portugal, with emphasis on the use of alternative gaseous fuels and their derivatives: natural gas, as a transition fuel, biomethane, and hydrogen and its derivatives. On the one hand, the study presents data on the use of these new fuels, the vehicle fleet, and the corresponding supply infrastructure. This analysis also includes existing projects for the production of biomethane and renewable hydrogen. For each of the above aspects, a comparison is made between the situation in Spain and Portugal and that of other European countries.
Finally, the report concludes with a review of the main recent legislative milestones at European and national level, which are considered to have the greatest impact in terms of advancing the decarbonisation of heavy transport.
